Stop Multitasking: Time Management Tips to Achieve Your Goals

February 3, 2026

The new year is here, the glitter might still be settling, and you’re staring at your ambitious list of goals thinking… how on earth am I supposed to get all of this done?

If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. As Moms, entrepreneurs, and dream-chasers, we are pros at juggling a thousand things at once. But here’s the truth: multitasking is a myth. In fact, trying to do it all at once is often what keeps us from actually achieving our goals. It’s time to stop multitasking and start working smarter, not harder.

Entry 1:31

We’ve all heard the myth that multitasking makes us more productive. The reality is, it does the exact opposite. Studies show that trying to switch between tasks actually slows you down and increases stress. Every time you jump from one thing to another—checking emails while cooking dinner, brainstorming blog ideas while helping with homework—you’re asking your brain to do mental gymnastics it wasn’t designed for.

Here’s where we Moms have a secret superpower: knowing what truly matters. And that superpower only works when we stop multitasking.

When I became a mom, everything shifted. My priorities changed almost overnight. Things I once thought mattered suddenly didn’t hold the same weight anymore.

When you become a Mom, you go from juggling a thousand things to a million things. It sounds dramatic, but every Mom reading this knows it’s true. Everyone else might roll their eyes and think I’m exaggerating. To that I say… go ahead.

Juggling that much means you learn, very quickly, how to prioritize what actually matters. Do I really need to vacuum right now, or should I spend a few extra minutes playing with my daughter? Does that email truly need to be sent this second, or can it wait while I sit here and watch her during swim class?

Childhood goes by in the blink of an eye, and I’m not willing to miss the big moments, or the small, ordinary ones that matter just as much.

As I’ve stepped into mompreneurhood, I’ve learned to be intentional about where my energy goes throughout the day. We only have so much to give. Choosing it wisely means focusing on what matters most in each moment and letting the rest wait.

The first step to beating multitasking is figuring out what matters most. Not everything on your to-do list is equally important. Ask yourself: what action today will make the biggest impact on my goals?

TO DO: Create a “priority list” for your day. Only 3–5 top tasks. That’s it. Everything else can wait. Yes, even folding the laundry.

This was a game changer for me. Once I started setting clear priorities and blocking time in my calendar each day, I noticed I was getting so much more done simply because I knew exactly what I was focusing on that day.

And if I didn’t get to something that was okay. I’d move it to another day. Sometimes tasks take longer than expected. Sometimes a kid gets sick and you’re picking them up early from school. Sometimes life just happens. And that’s okay.

We adjust. We shift. And we keep moving forward.

TO DO: Once you know your priorities, block dedicated time for each. Set a timer, shut down distractions, and focus fully on one task. Remember, the goal is to stop multitasking, not just switch tasks efficiently.

For example, if your goal is to write a blog post, give yourself a solid 90 minutes with no phone, no email, no “just one more load of laundry” interruptions. You’ll be amazed at how much progress you make. And let’s be real, writing a blog post usually takes more than 90 minutes. But you’d be surprised how much progress you can make in just 90 focused minutes when you disconnect from distractions and actually concentrate.

Use my FREE Weekly Focus & Flow Planner to map out your time blocks first. Once you’ve filled out the worksheet, take it one step further and actually block that time into your calendar.

I use Apple Calendar for everything. All my other calendars are linked to it so I can see my whole life in one place—work, kids, appointments, everything (fully color coded, obviously). The key here is blocking this time on the calendar you actually look at every single day.

When you do this, you’re no longer just hoping work gets done between snack requests and random interruptions. You’re intentionally making space for it. And suddenly your brain knows exactly what it’s supposed to focus on. No more staring at an ever-growing to-do list wondering where to even start.

You’ll be surprised how much structure and focus this creates. Instead of carrying around mental tabs all day, you can zero in on what actually needs to get done today and feel that sweet, satisfying sense of progress when you close your laptop.

Single-tasking is the secret weapon of productive Moms. It’s simple: focus on one thing at a time until it’s done. When you stop multitasking, you actually finish tasks faster and with better quality.

TO DO: Try it with even small things. Instead of scrolling Instagram while cooking dinner, focus on cooking. It’s a small shift but it trains your brain to fully engage with what you’re doing and suddenly, life feels a little less chaotic and a lot less stressful.

A while back, I was doing everything right or so I thought.

I was going through the motions on a tedious task while answering emails, taking phone calls, and probably half-watching the Today show.
Classic multitasking. Very “productive.” Until I hit send… and realized I’d sent the email to the wrong client.

My body immediately started overheating. I could feel the heat rush to my head. That awful, instant panic. I couldn’t believe it, but I could. I wasn’t focused on one thing, I was focused on everything. And it cost me.

Thankfully, I was met with grace. But we don’t always get that. That moment was my wake-up call and why I’m sharing this, so you don’t have to learn it the hard way.

At the end of the day, it was nothing catastrophic. But it was enough to stop me in my tracks.

Technology can be a blessing or a curse. Calendars, task managers, and apps can help you stay organized, but they also can be productivity traps if misused. Use them to schedule, remind, and track, but don’t fall into the trap of multitasking with notifications and endless tabs open.

Some tools that Moms love:

Remember: the point is to stop multitasking, not to juggle more things at once.

You’re a Mom. You’re human. You will slip up. You will try to check emails during a toddler meltdown or brainstorm your next blog post while cooking dinner. And that’s okay.

The goal is progress, not perfection.

TO DO: Celebrate the small wins: finishing a task without switching, crossing off a priority, or simply keeping your coffee warm for more than five minutes.

For me, prioritizing has gone beyond just business tasks. It’s also meant intentionally prioritizing quality family time—especially on the weekends. Most Sundays, I’m device-free, giving my family my full, undivided attention.

That time has been an incredible reset going into the week. It gives me the connection I crave with my daughter during busy weekdays and the space I need to truly recharge. By the time Monday rolls around, I feel more energized, more present, and far more productive.

This shift has been a huge win for me.

So here’s the takeaway: the new year doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. By learning to stop multitasking, you free yourself to focus, create, and achieve.

Your goals are big and beautiful, but they’re not going anywhere. By giving each one the attention it deserves, you’ll reach them faster and enjoy the journey.

So go ahead, mama: close the tabs, silence the phone, and dive into one thing at a time. You’ve got this.

Here’s to all the incredible Moms juggling a million things—keep shining bright, cheering each other on, and building the life you love!

Xoxo,

Ashley
