Entry 1:2
Let’s be real—trying to start a business while working full time can feel like juggling flaming swords while riding a unicycle… blindfolded. You’ve got 24 hours in a day, and if you’re like most humans (hi, sleep lovers!), at least 7–8 of those hours are spent recharging. That leaves about 12-16 waking hours, and 8-9 of those are claimed by your 9-to-5 (plus commute, errands, snack breaks, family time… you know the drill). So where on Earth are you supposed to fit in “start my dream biz”? We all get the same 24 hours—it’s how we choose to use them that makes the difference.
The truth is: it’s 100% doable—and you’re definitely not alone in trying. In fact, according to Entrepreneur, 44% of new businesses in the U.S. in 2023 were launched as side hustles by folks who were still clocking in full or part-time. Bonus stat? Entrepreneurs who start their businesses while still employed are one-third less likely to fail than those who quit their jobs cold turkey. Now that’s what we call side-hustle hope! Read that article from Entrepreneur here.

When I launched my first business, I had just moved to a new state—and didn’t have a full-time job yet. I jumped right into building my biz with all the time in the world. But just a month later? BAM. Back to full-time work… in another state. Every Monday, I’d pack up and drive six hours to work onsite with clients all week (hellooo hotel life), then drive six hours back on Fridays. Oh, and yes—still running my business in between. Exhausted? Understatement of the year. But I did it. And looking back, I wouldn’t change a thing. That wild routine only lasted about six months before burnout came knocking and I knew it was time to find something closer to home.
Here’s the deal: you don’t need to quit your job tomorrow to start a business while working full time and build the business of your dreams. Most people need their full-time job to pay the bills while they start a business while working full time and build it on the side. And that’s totally okay. You don’t have to quit your job tomorrow to chase your dreams—you can do both. You just need to get intentional with your time. Maybe that means swapping your scroll sessions on social for CEO hour. Or using your current job to pick up skills that’ll serve your future biz. Time is your greatest asset—it’s how you spend it that counts.
“Can I really start a business while working full time?”
The answer is YES, you absolutely can. And I’m going to show you how—with bite-sized steps, encouraging pep talks, and a big ol’ cheer from one mama to another. Let’s go.
Starting a biz while working full-time isn’t just possible—it’s totally doable with the right mindset, tools, and a bit of weekly CEO time. Here’s your step-by-step breakdown to make it happen (without losing your mind).

Alright, Mama—before we dive into logos, legal stuff, and launching, let’s do a little mental makeover. Your mindset? It’s your business’s secret weapon. Here’s how to flip the switch from frazzled to focused:
Yes, your 9-5 might not be your dream job—but it is funding your dream life. Think of it like your first angel investor (minus the fancy blazer).
This week, take a little time to review your finances:
Start small, but start strategically. This isn’t about cutting every coffee—just being intentional.
You’re learning more than you think at work. Client communication, organization, leadership—yep, all useful in business-land.
Next time you clock in, ask yourself:
“How can I take what I’m doing today and make it work for my business tomorrow?”
Spoiler alert: your day job is quietly training you to be the boss.
Let’s get real. You’re not building this thing to impress anyone else—you’re building it for you (and maybe for those tiny humans calling you Mom).
You’re on your timeline. You get to choose when to work, when to rest, and when to press pause. This isn’t a race—it’s a purposeful journey.
Whenever the guilt creeps in (hello, perfectionism), remind yourself:
“I chose this business so I could build it my way. And that’s exactly what I’m doing.”
Deep breath. Shoulders back. You’re not behind—you’re just beginning your journey to start a business while working full time.
I kicked off this blog knowing one thing for sure: I was doing it my way—no pressure, no deadlines from anyone else (because, hello, mama life doesn’t run on a 9-5 schedule!). So, when life gets crazy with my kiddo, the chaos, and I start feeling guilty for not pouring as much time or energy into my business as I think I should, I remind myself exactly why I set it up like this.
I’m not racing anyone else’s clock. I work on my business when I’ve got the time, the energy, and the right vibe—not because some outside force says I have to. And honestly? That little mindset trick? It’s like a giant weight lifted off my shoulders. Freedom feels so good—especially when you’re juggling a toddler on one hip and a laptop in the other hand!

Remember: there’s no fast pass to success, so don’t trade clarity for speed. Take a beat and ask yourself:
Now, try crafting a short, snappy mission statement that wraps up your why, your goals, and your passion—all in one powerful sentence. This little gem should inspire you every time you hit a rough patch or feel like you’re spinning too many plates.
Pro tip: Keep it close by and pull it out whenever you need a pep talk. And guess what? Your mission statement isn’t set in stone—it’s like your favorite pair of comfy leggings: flexible, evolving, and perfectly suited to wherever your business journey takes you.
Need a spark? Here’s the Boss Mama CEO mission statement to get your wheels turning:

“At Boss Mama CEO, I’m on a mission to redefine what it means to be a working Mom. Gone are the days of choosing between family and professional ambition – we can do it all. I believe Moms are the CEOs of their lives and their businesses, balancing it all with power and grace. Through mentorship, community, and my guided journal, I help ambitious Moms gain clarity, overcome fear, and turn their passions into profit, on their own terms — all while balancing a baby on their hip, running the kids to soccer practice, and still showing up as the boss they were always meant to be. It’s time to prove that we can build thriving businesses and be there for our families, because success isn’t about choosing between family and professional ambition – it’s about creating a life where both can flourish.”
Alright, mama — this one’s a game-changer! If you want to start a business while working full time, time management is your secret weapon.
If you don’t manage your time like a boss, burnout will sneak up faster than a toddler after a cookie. So, ditch the daily overwhelm and start thinking weekly.
Map out your big, juicy weekly goals — like tackling the legal stuff one week, designing that killer logo the next, and then scouting out your go-to digital tools the week after. Think of it like eating your favorite chocolate bar one bite at a time — slow, steady, and way more enjoyable.
Then, grab your calendar and time block little chunks each day to chip away at those goals without losing your sanity.
Yep, just 3! It’s enough to keep the momentum rolling without turning you into a frazzled hot mess.
And hey, if you find yourself crushing it and want to sneak in more time, you do you! But remember, burnout is the ultimate passion killer — and we’re here to keep that fire blazing bright, mama!
Alright, time to tackle the boring-but-oh-so-important stuff — yes, the legal mumbo jumbo (yuck!) — but don’t worry, there’s fun stuff too, like picking your biz name and designing your website! I’m all about that creative vibe.
Here’s your must-do basics checklist.
You don’t have to do all the things yourself. Meet your new besties: automation tools! These virtual assistants work 24/7 so you can spend less time stressing and more time bossing up. Here’s where they shine:
My pro tip? Start with project/task management — it’s the boss hub where everything else comes together. Once that’s locked in, the rest falls into place like a well-oiled machine.
I get it. After a full day of working, chauffeuring kids to practice, cooking dinner, bedtime battles, and trying to start a business while working full time, your “me time” is sacred. That cozy Netflix binge? Yeah, it’s tempting. But now, it’s your time to hustle on that business dream.

Oh, I get it—Netflix is calling and those cozy couch vibes are strong. Choosing CEO hours over a good binge sesh? Not always the easiest pick. Been there, still there. In fact, as I write this, I’m curled up on the couch with some gloriously mindless TV playing in the background (I need the noise—it’s my version of a productivity soundtrack). It’s 8 PM, and after a full 9–5 workday, bedtime stories and snuggles with my daughter, here I am—clocking in for my second shift.
But this is the kind of hustle I’m saying “yes” to right now. Because it’s not just about late-night emails or to-do lists—it’s about building something meaningful. For me, my daughter, and our future.
Here’s the truth bomb: the hardest part is just getting started. Think of it like going to the gym — the first few times are rough, but once you hit your groove, it’s smooth sailing. Same deal here. Get into a rhythm, and your business hustle will start feeling like second nature.
And hey, if you hit burnout and just can’t on a certain night, no shame! Rest up — you want your CEO brain sharp, not fried. Recharge, then come back swinging.
No cancellations allowed! It’s only a couple of hours, but that small, focused time chunk makes your goals feel way more doable. Ready to own that schedule?
Your Future Business is Built One Step at a Time
Guess what? You’re not behind — no one’s keeping score but you! Everyone’s on their own wild, wonderful journey, and your timeline is totally unique (so, no comparing, okay?).
“You’re not behind—you’re building. One brave, beautiful step at a time.” – Boss Mama CEO
Forget the hustle marathon. We’re all about consistency here. Little steps every day, every week, moving your dream forward as you start a business while working full time — without burning out. Because spoiler alert: there’s no finish line! Your biz is a forever adventure with new things to do all the time.
Set small, manageable goals each week — stuff you can actually check off your list. When you look back at month one, you’ll be amazed at how far you’ve come (and you’ll want to throw yourself a mini dance party).
We all start somewhere—and every boss mama’s journey looks a little different. Mine? It began fresh out of grad school, wide-eyed and ready to take on the 9–5 world. I landed a role as an Event Sales Manager at a Destination Management Company in sunny San Antonio, TX. It was exciting, fast-paced, and full of potential… but pretty quickly, I realized the traditional 9–5 life wasn’t it for me long-term.
I loved the work—but I kept thinking, “Wait… could I do this on my own?” Spoiler alert: I could. So I took a leap (more like a nervous hop), and jumped headfirst into building something for me.
Here’s the truth—there’s never a “perfect” time to start. Life will always be busy, messy, and unpredictable. But the best time? It’s now.
You’ve got this, Mama!
